Mainstream (2022)
Unity Interactive Animation, Custom Silicone Controller, Acrylic
Mainstream is an interactive animation that examines the invisible labor disabled individuals perform to navigate spaces not designed for them. The piece features a looping animation that is intentionally endless—frustratingly difficult, and often impossible, for a single user to complete.
Custom joysticks, modeled after the artist’s feet, serve as the primary input. This embodied interface highlights the manual, deliberate effort required in each movement—emphasizing how walking, often taken for granted, becomes a meticulous and exhausting task. Through repetition and resistance, Mainstream critiques the myth of seamless access and underscores the persistent physical and emotional toll of being made to adapt to an unaccommodating world.
