Thanks, I Did It Myself (2024)
During their IKEA residency, Christa and collaborator Connor Walden, embarked on a journey to envision a future amidst the sea of Scandinavian designs. Enticed by IKEA’s promise of modular bliss adaptable to all lifestyles, they explored the showroom, open to all family structures, a space to LARP and imagine their future selves. Upon making their selections, they were tasked with bringing this vision to life through IKEA’s do-it-yourself ethos. However, amidst the assembly of furniture, questions arose about the meaning of “doing it” and the essence of the self. And, who is able to “do it”?
In this performance (video sculpture), Christa holds an iPad for others to look over her shoulder as she watches Connor building Ikea furniture for her, a gift both in object and in video. A jarring and intimate experience as Christa explores what it means to do it yourself.
